More Denali
This picture was taken coming into the area of Denali national Park. It’s probably about 20-30 miles out. Obviously gorgeous.
Though it’s hard sometimes to understand through pictures the vastness of the Alaskan forntier this picture gives you some idea of the size of that river. When you’re in it, EVERYTHING in Alaska is big.
This was taken just a few miles before we hit the ‘city’ that services the park. For scale…in the center of the picture, in front of the left side of the bridge, you can see a person standing on the shore of the river.
For many who go through Denali National Park, Caribou might be the only thing they see if some of the other wildlife aren’t out on the day of a tour.
On our tour we saw very few of these and they were often quite a ways off in the distance. Regardless, the ones we saw were no babies. Look at the rack on this guy…
These were the first critters we saw as we made our way into the park. These guys are Willow Ptarmigans (a kind of grouse)…the State bird of Alaska.
Apparently, they change color from light brown in summer to snow white in the winter as camouflage from predators. Thouigh you can’t really see it in this picture they have feathered toes.
